Turkey may hold snap parliamentary election – presidential advisor

It is not ruled out that Turkey will hold a snap parliamentary election, Cemil Ertem, advisor to the country's president, told the NTV channel May 6.

The parliamentary election can be held by 2019, he added.

Aydin Unal, an MP from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) earlier said that the new prime minister and chairman of the party won't be able to be as influential as the current Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

Davutoglu has said that he will not run for the party chairman.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier said the decision to hold the AKP extraordinary congress was made by Davutoglu. However, the latter denied Erdogan's remarks.

Candidates for the chairman position at the Justice and Development Party were named May 5.

The Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication Binali Yildirim, Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak, Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus, and the ruling party's vice chairman Mehmet Ali Sahin are among the candidates.

During the parliamentary election held in Turkey on Nov.1 of 2015, the Justice and Development Party garnered 49.41 percent of votes, Republican People's Party (CHP) - 25.38 percent, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) - 11.93 percent and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) - 10.7 percent.
