Turkey calls for caution from Saudi Arabia and Iran amid rising tension

05 January 2016 [16:16] - TODAY.AZ

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has called for Iran and Saudi Arabia to be “careful” and use the language of diplomacy rather than threats, amid rising tension between Tehran and Riyadh Hurriyet Daily News reported

In a written statement on Jan. 5, the ministry expressed concern about attacks on Saudi diplomatic missions in Iran, stressing that those premises should be protected by host countries in line with the Vienna Accord.

Saudi embassy and consular offices were attacked by angry crowds in Tehran and Mashhad in recent days, protesting Saudi Arabia’s execution of prominent Shiite cleric and activist Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry described these attacks as “unacceptable,” adding that strains between the two countries should not negatively influence the security, stability and peace of the region.
