The head of the Armenian National Congress, Levon Zurabyan, said that no sane person would vote for the proposed constitutional amendments, the main purpose of which is to "bury democracy in Armenia, and to perpetuate the power of Serzh Sargsyan," whose policies have resulted in the emigration of 300,000 Armenians."

Despite numerous protests and the apparent reluctance of both the people and many politicians, it seems that the current government is not planning to stop.

Zurabyan also said that people are concerned about the government’s dishonesty and worried that their “no” on the referendum would be simply changed to “yes.”

People have no confidence, either, in the electoral system of the country or in the elections.

Everyone understands that the Armenian government will resort to various kinds of fraud to secure the 700,000 votes needed to reach the so-called legal threshold.

Zurabyan stressed that to “beat” the authorities and deprive them of the possibility of fraud, it is necessary to take an "active mandatory participation in the elections and organize public scrutiny at polling stations with the help of neutral observers who may be selected from party factions.”

Judging by the mood in the country, the people and politicians do not believe in the necessity of these changes and have seen an active, persistent desire by the authorities to turn these changes into practice for “unknown” reasons. In fact, they are obvious – as Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, whose second and final term expires in 2018, is trying to hold onto power.

If these constitutional amendments are adopted, it will allow Sargsyan to rule the country, either as the parliamentary speaker or the prime minister, and will entrench his political force, the Republican Party of Armenia, in power.

The Armenian government purposely approaches its final target – to create a controlled democracy in this poor and weak post-Soviet country.

The economy of this South Caucasus country is disappearing to nowhere as it suffers in all areas. Meanwhile, the government spends very large amounts of money to implement constitutional amendments not supported by the people, only to ensure maintaining the power of the current authorities, who led the country to this condition.

Aggressive Armenia, with its destroyed reputation, ill-conceived economy, corrupt and tyrannical government, has no future after the current authorities “immortalize” its power. The opposition and ordinary people, trying to change the situation, will be able to see improvements only after the current leadership of the country leaves and the country changes its internal and external policies.
