UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS will participate in the implementation of Iran’s 4th national AIDS plan.

Fardad Doroudi, UNAIDS Country Director for Iran, told Trend that more than 16 government organizations and bodies are collaborating in the plan. The plan has 10 strategic goals, he said, adding that the UN provides help to the national plan.

Medicine, diagnostic and laboratorial substances, as well as some equipment which are complicated in technology are imported through the UNAIDS, Doroudi said, adding there are a wide range of educational programs and projects, which are being implemented within the framework of the plan.

The projects are very diverse and this is one of the largest joint programs by Iran and the UN, he noted.

“I do not remember the exact volume of investment. But, over 85 percent of the investment is made by the government and the rest is secured by the UN.”

According to the UNAIDS website, there were between 51,000 and 110,000 people affected with AIDS in Iran in 2014. Some 9,300 women of 15 and up are living with AIDS in the country. Moreover, deaths due to AIDS are reported between 2,700 and 8,100.
