09 September 2015 [12:13] - TODAY.AZ

Iran’s northwestern region and border with Turkey is secure despite some activities of armed groups, deputy commander of the Iranian Army Ground Forces, Brigadier General Kiumars Heidari said.

The Iranian commander made the remarks while reacting to the recent armed conflict on the Iran-Turkey border with members of PJAK, the Iranian wing of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

“PJAK is in armed conflict with Turkey as well as the Kurdish administration of Iraq, so some times it may be involve in armed conflicts with our border bases.”

But it should not be considered as insecurity on the Iran-Turkey border, the commander said, Iran ’s semi-official Fars news agency reported Sept. 9.

Two IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) members were killed during an armed confrontation with PJAK members in Iran ’s northwestern province of West Azerbaijan on Sept. 8.

The incident took place on the Iran-Turkey border near the city of Khoy. Two PJAK members were killed in the conflict while five members of the group were arrested.
