Iran’s IRGC considers supporting Syria as duty

01 September 2015 [13:20] - TODAY.AZ

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps considers it a duty to comprehensively support the Syrian government, IRGC Commander Mohammad Ali Jafari said.

It would be naïve to think Iran would stop fighting injustice, he said, Fars news agency reported September 1.

Iran is a close ally of the Syrian government and has always shown its support for the regime of President Bashar Assad.

The Islamic Republic views the Syrian regime as its main strategic ally in the region and as part of an "axis of resistance" against Israel.

Jafari also pointed to alleged restrictions to be put on Iran ’s missile activities and stressed the missiles are key to Iran ’s deterrence.

For many years, the IRGC has had on its agenda to increase the precision of its surface-to-surface missiles with ranges up to 2000 kilometers, he pointed out.

“We know that resolutions have never created the power to attack Iran,” Jafari said, referring to a recent UN Security Council resolution on the Iranian nuclear deal.

The real axis of Iran ’s power is not weapons, but the public defense, which is growing more and more powerful, he noted. He also said the number of military drills to be held by the IRGC in the current Iranian calendar year (to end March 20, 2016) will reach 20.

Commenting on the IRGC’s economic enterprises, he said the military unit has fully replaced foreign companies in tapping phases 15 and 16 of the South Pars oil and gas field in the Gulf.

The IRGC started as a burgeoning public organization after the Islamic Revolution. During the Iran-Iraq war it played a key role. After the war it grew in influence to ensure the Islamic Republic’s security. It has been a leading organization in diverse areas from civil reconstruction to cultural undertakings to cyber security and so on.
