Turkmenistan announced its intention to increase the volume of its gas production in connection with its plan to become a major energy supplier to EU countries.

One of the factors which impacted on that decision is the possible construction of the 300-kilometer trans-Caspian gas pipeline, which is expected to annually transport 30 billion cubic meters of gas to Europe via Azerbaijan.

Turkmen Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Muhammetnur Halylov confirmed the increased potential of hydrocarbon resources in the country due to the discovery of unique gas fields on the Gas Congress in Avaz, Turkmenistan. One of the major Turkmen gas fields is Galkinish, which confirmed Turkmenistan as one of the largest energy powers.

Presently, Turkmenistan's oil resources reached 71.2 billion tons Halylov said. In particular, 53 billion tons locate on land areas and 18.2 billion tons-on marine areas.

Turkmenistan, rich by its gas resources, relies on gas output standing at the 70 percent of the whole industry. Due to that Turkmenistan ranks second in the CIS countries after Russia and fourth in the world.

"Turkmenistan is guided by the principle that doesn't provide for the substitution of the supply in any direction due to the decline in exports in the other, and supposes an adequate increase in production of natural fuel from both the already developed and put into operation new fields, " the minister said.

Currently, Turkmenistan plans to realize the TAPI project (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) - a 1800-kilometer gas pipeline which will provide gas to 1.5 billion people. The annual capacity of the pipeline will exceed 30 billion cubic meters of gas.
