The newly appointed head of the European Union Monitoring Mission visited Georgia to hold talks over the recent situation in Georgia’s breakaway regions.

Kestutis Jankauskas in a meeting with Tamar Beruchashvili, Georgia's Foreign Minister shared his opinion about the ongoing developments in Georgia's occupied regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The diplomats particularly mentioned the impact of the so-called treaty on Alliance and Strategic Partnership signed between Russia and Georgia’s breakaway Abkhazia.

Beruschashvili expressed Georgia's deep concern related to the similar agreement to be possibly signed Georgia’s other breakaway regime in South Ossetia.

She stressed the urgent necessity of implementing the EUMM mandate throughout the entire territory of Georgia and monitoring the situation inside Georgia's occupied regions.

Beruchashvili also congratulated Jankauskas on his appointment as Head of the EUMM in Georgia and emphasized the importance of the EUMM as the only international mechanism currently operating in Georgia's territory.

During her visit to Washington last month, Beruchashvili said there was no alternative to dialogue with Russia despite all difficulties in political ties between the neighboring countries.

She announced that Georgia’s direct dialogue with Russia in the Abashidze-Karasin format will continue, referring to regular talks between the Georgian Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Relations with Russia, Zurab Abashidze, and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin.

"Georgia has not rejected the dialogue in the Abashidze-Karasin format, which has been successful for more than two years and already produced concrete results," she said.
