Iran, P5+1 pass over 90% of nuclear talks, difficult steps ahead

22 October 2014 [15:36] - TODAY.AZ
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said that Iran and the P5+1 have passed over 90 percent of nuclear negotiations and final “sensitive, difficult and important” steps lie ahead, Iran’s State IRINN TV reported Oct. 22.

She made the remarks while commenting about the chief Russian negotiator Sergei Ryabkov's statements who said 98 percent of a final deal has been agreed upon, following the latest round of nuclear talks in Vienna in mid-October.

Iranian Spokeswoman underlined that all parties try to take advantage of next 40 days to achieve a final deal before 24 Nov. deadline.

She noted that extending the deadline is not in the sides’ agenda yet.

Afkham suggested to the parts to avoid exposing to media the topics which are under discussion by nuclear negotiating teams and not finalized during the remaining sensitive period(till Nov. 24).

Her remarks came after the report was made by Reuters about the Iranian officials demand for partial removal of sanctions only in specific areas.

In the negotiations with six major powers, the Iranians has said they are no longer demanding a total end to economic sanctions in return for curbing their nuclear program and would accept initially lifting just the latest, most damaging, sanctions, Reuters said Oct. 21.

The Islamic Republic’s foreign ministry officials have rejected the report.

Iran and the P5+1 (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) held their latest round of talks in Vienna in mid-October to work out a final agreement aimed at ending the long-standing dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Last November, the two sides clinched an interim nuclear accord, which took effect on Jan. 20 and expired six months later. However, the parties agreed to extend their talks until Nov. 24 as they remained divided on a number of key issues.
