NATO commander visits Georgia

The NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander of U.S. European Command, General Philip Breedlove paid a visit to Georgia on October 21.

Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania met NATO's high-ranking official on October 22 to discuss NATO-Georgia partnership, implemented defense reforms, participation of Georgia in international missions and the future plans of cooperation between two sides.

They also focused on the fulfillment of the Substantial Package granted to Georgia at the NATO's Wales Summit. Discussions also covered the regional security environment. The two sides discussed the threats posed to Georgia given Russia`s aggressive policy. They called for taking steps by the international community to ensure stability in the region.

Head of the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia William Lahue and NATO Military Liaison Officer Colonel Maximilian Eder also attended the meeting. The Chief of the Georgian Armed Forces' General Staff, Mayor-General Vakhtang Kapanadze, Deputy Defence Minister Mikheil Darchiashvili and other officials represented Georgia at the talks.

General Philip Breedlove will meet with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. He will also visit Ivane Javakhishvili State University in Tbilisi during his two-day visit to the South Cucasus country. NATO General will deliver a lecture for students from different higher institutions and will answer their questions.

NATO has earlier approved the NATO-Georgia package during the meeting held in 28+1 format in Brussels. The military alliance expressed its full readiness to timely and effectively fulfill the package.

Georgia has become one of the five countries to achieve the new elevated status among the NATO partners.
