Iran, Russia to hold joint military drill in Caspian Sea

Commander of Iran's Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said Iran and Russia will carry out a joint military drill in the Caspian Sea Oct. 15, Iran’s IRNA news agency reported.

Sayyari said the Russian warships will leave Iran's territorial waters as soon as the exercises wrap up.

It should be noted that a fleet of Russian warships berthed in the Caspian port of Anzali in Northern Iran on Oct. 13 with a message of "peace and friendship."

The warships’ arrival is aimed at expanding bilateral economic, political and military cooperation between Iran and Russia.

The Russian ships will visit the ports of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan and will conduct joint exercises with Kazakhstan’s naval forces as well.

During the 20-day trip aimed at developing and strengthening international cooperation between the Caspian states, the ships are making friendly visits to the ports of three Caspian states - Azerbaijan, Iran and Kazakhstan.

Last year the Russian ships and the ships of other Caspian states exchanged friendly visits four times. The Iranian ships visited Astrakhan and Russia’s Volga region last year.
