Ukrainian President declares week long ceasefire

21 June 2014 [13:00] - TODAY.AZ
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko declared Friday night a week long unilateral ceasefire in the east of the country to give diplomacy a chance to put an end to clashes between Ukrainian army and pro-Russia separatists, Anadolu Agency reported.

The President's office said in a statement that the ceasefire will last from June 20, 22:00 to June 27, 10:00.

Poroshenko, however, warned that "in case of an armed attack on the Ukrainian units or civilians, our servicemen will open fire in response."

Ukraine's military and pro-Russia separatists have been engaged in constant fighting for more than two months in the country's eastern provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk where pro-Russia sentiments are running high among the ethnic Russian community.

Ukrainian President presented a peace plan on the settlement of the situation in the east of Ukraine on Friday.

His office said that the President called on everyone to support the actions aimed at a peaceful settlement of the situation in the east of Ukraine.

"The plan consists of 15 steps and provides for safety guarantees for all the negotiating participants; amnesty for those who lay down weapons and for those who have not committed serious crimes; and the liberation of hostages", Ukrainian presidency said in the statement.
