Turkish calls citizens to urgently leave 8 more provinces of Iraq

19 June 2014 [08:15] - TODAY.AZ
Turkish Foreign Ministry has urged the citizens of Turkey to leave eight more provinces of Iraq.

The provinces of Babil, Najaf, Karbala, Wasit, Maysan, Al-Qadisiyah, Musenna and Dhi Qar were added to the list, which included names of the cities the Foreign Ministry previously urged to leave, Turkish TRT Haber TV channel said on June 18.

This list previously included the cities of Mosul, Kirkuk, Salah al Din, Diyala, Anbar, Baghdad and Basra.

Turkish Foreign Ministry also said that 10 people from the staff of the Turkish Consulate in Basra, who were earlier evacuated to Kuwait, have arrived in Turkey.

The reason for this was the capture of a number of Iraqi cities by the militants of the terrorist group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Earlier, it was reported that the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Bulent Arinc said there is no threat to the life of Turkish citizens in Iraq.

He also added that in case of a serious danger Turkey can evacuate its nationals from Iraq.

Currently, there are 125,000 Turkish citizens in Iraq.

On June 13, Iraqi army lost control over the city of Samarra. This is the third city in Iraq, which is completely controlled by the ISIL militants.

Earlier, the ISIL captured the cities of Mosul and Tikrit.

Reportedly, despite the fact that the city of Kirkuk is controlled by Peshmerga (special forces, subordinate to the Kurdish administration), the fights are continuing in several residential areas in northern Iraq between Peshmerga and the ISIL.

On June 10, the ISIL militants captured the administrative center of Mosul in the northern Iraqi Province of Ninawa, a number of small settlements, as well as part of the Salah al Din Province, including its center - the city of Tikrit.

The ISIL militants took control over the Iraqi town of Tal Afar on June 16.
