Mine explosion takes six lives in Ukraine

According to the preliminary information, six miners died in a gas explosion, which occurred at the Severnaya mine of the Makeevugol state enterprise in Ukraine's Donetsk region on Monday.
The spike of the steam and gas mixture occurred at 8.47 p.m. and 88 people were in the mine at the time, the Donetsk regional state administration said in a statement.

"According to the preliminary information, six miners sustained deadly injuries. Five more miners sought medical care at the medical facility of the enterprise. They will be brought to the regional burn center and other treatment facilities," the document said.

Paramilitary mine rescue squads are currently working at the scene. Chairman of the Donetsk regional state administration has gone to the site.

A governmental committee to investigate the reasons of the incident, headed by acting Deputy Prime Minister Yuriy Boyko, has been established. According to the information of the Donetsk regional state administration, Boyko will fly to Donetsk on early Tuesday.
