Ukraine govt open to dialogue without ultimatum

The authorities support a constructive dialogue with the opposition, a dialogue about stopping confrontation in downtown Kyiv, but do not accept any ultimatums for its termination, Ukrinform reported.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said this in an interview in Switzerland with the BBC television channel, the media liaisons department of the secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine reported.

"I would like opposition leaders, particularly Mr. Klitschko, to move away from the language of ultimatums. We know the real sociology, and we know the level of support for all opposition leaders. So they have to be more modest in their ultimatums. We have a legitimately elected president, who was elected in a democratic election. A large number of people support the president. A sign of this is mass rallies in Kyiv and in most regions," Azarov said, adding that the opposition, which makes its demands, must coordinate its weight and influence in society with these demands.

He said that the authorities are ready for compromise and are ready to reach agreement with the opposition for the benefit of the country.

"We are ready for compromise, we are ready to reach agreement, and I think it's possible, because it is in the interests of the country. Opposition leaders have to understand that they are responsible for preventing bloodshed, and the authorities are responsible for this. But now it's impossible to shift all responsibility in this situation onto the authorities. We must bring Kyiv back to normal operation together," Azarov said.
