Merkel dismisses Ukraine deal in Vilnius

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she does not expect a much-debated association agreement with Ukraine to be finalized at this week's summit in Vilnius, dpa reported.

"We will make very clear that the EU is ready to take in Ukraine as an associated member, to sign the association agreement," Merkel told journalists as she arrived for the meeting. "I have no hope that it will succeed this time, but the door is open."

"Unfortunately not all expectations have yet been fulfilled," she added.
