02 May 2013 [14:54] - TODAY.AZ
The National Olympic Committee of Georgia has adopted a decision at an extraordinary meeting to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. As reported by the NOC, the decision was taken unanimously.

46 delegates - representatives of various sports federations participated in the voting process, the committee reported.

The NOC President Leri Khabelov congratulated everyone with the decision. "We made the decision based on considerations of sports, and I am glad the preparations of our Olympic team have not passed in vain" he said, wishing the athletes a decent performance in Sochi.

Georgia will send a formal request to participate in the Winter Olympics in Sochi to the IOC by May 7.

It should be noted that Georgia and Russia have no diplomatic relations.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has previously mentioned the possibility of boycotting the Sochi Olympics.

Large scale military actions were launched in South Ossetia in Georgia on August 8 2008. Later Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military. Russia recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia late in August. Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow in response and has announced the two unrecognized republics to be occupied territories.
