Demographic situation to be controlled by special fund in Georgia

14 February 2013 [16:31] - TODAY.AZ
Demographic Development Fund is being created in Georgia in order to avoid a demographic disaster, one of the fund project authors Tamar Chiburdanidze said at a briefing in Tbilisi.

She said in recent years the demographic situation had worsened in Georgia.

"The former government concealed this and made claims about a baby boom in the country," Chiburdanidze said.

The fund's presentation is planned in a few days.

As Chiburdanidze noted, a group of experts will work on neutralisation of 15 existing demographic threats to the fund. It is planned that fund staff will also conduct nationwide campaigns to convey information to the public on the demographic situation and possible threats in this area.

At the briefing, Chiburdanidze cited information of the UN Population Fund, in accordance with which by 2050 Georgia's population will fall to 1.170.000.
