Azerbaijan is the leader country in the South Caucasus region, Mexican senator Carlos Jimenez Macias said at a meeting with members of the Milli Majlis working group on inter-parliamentary ties. Carlos Jimenez Macias noted Azerbaijan managed to survive problems it faced during the first years of restoration of its independence, adding the country`s economy continued to grow amid global financial crisis.
He said Mexico keeps a close watch on the ongoing processes in the South Caucasus region. He noted “the support Azerbaijan gave to Mexico when the country gained observer status at PACE was very important for us”. Carlos Jimenez Macias pointed out his country was interested in boosting its relations with Azerbaijan.
Head of the working group Ulvi Guliyev briefed Carlos Jimenez Macias and his accompanying delegation on the activity and international relations of the Azerbaijani parliament. Guliyev said Azerbaijan had been developing rapidly since it regained independence. “But Armenia`s military aggression against Azerbaijan is a major obstacle to this development.”
Guliyev also thanked Carlos Jimenez Macias as the Mexican parliament adopted a resolution backing Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity. The sides discussed a number of issues including how to develop relations between the two countries` legislative bodies, intensify reciprocal visits, and organize business forums.
