Swedish MP: One should not expect EU to resolve conflicts in South Caucasus on its own

01 February 2011 [12:25] - TODAY.AZ
The European Union can help in conflict solution in the South Caucasus, using its own means, but one should not rely only on this structure, Carl Hamilton, chairman for the European Affairs Committee at the Swedish Parliament believes.

"I think it can help the conflict solution in the region but in the end of solution of these conflicts Europe can help with it soft power. I think that EU countries are fairly united they are not splited as they in other foreign affairs, so I believe that they have good chance to attract this issue in united front," he said.

However, the South Caucasus governments should not rely only on the EU, and think that EU's interest in cooperation within the "Eastern Partnership" frees them from independent actions in resolving the frozen conflicts.

"The solution must come from the governments. The fact that EU is interested in good relations doesn't mean that they can relax and hope for solely EU participation in resolving conflicts," Hamilton said.

According to the Swedish MP, anyone should not expect that European Union have full power to end conflicts in the region, including the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
