“As friendly, fraternal and neighboring countries, Iran and Azerbaijan enjoy high-level political and cultural ties. The relationship between our countries has historical roots,” said Iran's interior minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar in his interview.

On his visit to Azerbaijan, the minister said “the big Iranian delegation came to Baku on the invitation of Azeri interior minister to have fruitful meetings”.

Touching upon the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Najjar said they discussed various issues of mutual interest, including further development of bilateral ties.

The Iranian minister also spoke of his talks with his Azeri counterpart.

“During our meeting with the Azeri minister of internal affairs Ramil Usubov we have signed a Memorandum on security,” he noted.

According to him, the Memorandum covers a variety of “important” issues, including cooperation in the fight against organized crime, illegal drug circulation, smuggling, human trafficking, illegal migration, as well as the exchange of prisoners and simplification of visa regime for Iranian citizens.

The Iranian minister said both countries attach “enormous” significance to the question of security as they share land and sea borders.

Najjar talked about their meeting in Azerbaijan's Ministry of Emergency Situations, saying “Iran has great experience in responding to emergencies and natural disasters and is ready for cooperation with Azerbaijan”.

The Iranian minister said the two countries need to further expand economic cooperation. He stressed that Iran and Azerbaijan agreed on establishing companies, which, he added would maintain joint investments.
