Technical issues, such as investigation of incidents on the contact line, have to be solved alongside withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman Hikmet Hajiyev told Trend, commenting on the statement of Press Secretary of the Armenian Foreign Ministry Tigran Balayan regarding implementation of high-level agreement reached in 2016.

“I’d like to remind Armenian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, who touched upon the Vienna and St. Petersburg agreements of 2016, that the intensive talks held during those meeting resulted in agreement on withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. Technical issues, such as investigation of incidents on the contact line, had to be solved alongside it,” Hajiyev said.

He also advised Balayan to read the documents carefully and thoughtfully, as well as to change the same old song played by Armenian Foreign Ministry since Edward Nalbandian’s term in office.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
