There is no military solution to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during a joint press point with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev at NATO Headquarters on November 23.

"Today we have discussed regional security in South Caucasus. The unresolved Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is a matter of concern. It is clear that there is no military solution to this conflict," he said adding that NATO has no direct role here.

Stoltenberg further said that NATO supports the works of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

"I am encouraged to hear about your renewed dialogue with the president of Armenia. We encourage you to continue path to negotiated solution and avoid new escalation," he concluded.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
