The conflicts existing in the world today are not the result of small states’ activities, but the consequences of policies pursued, in particular, by Western states, Novruz Mammadov, assistant to the president for foreign policy issues, head of department, told reporters in Baku on October 23.

This is returning to Europe as a boomerang, he said.

“There are enough moments in Europe that can be a source of separatism. They face such problems today because they did not initially take fair positions, but openly and implicitly supported separatism,” noted Mammadov.

“Back in the day, we told the countries facing these problems to express their position against separatism. Now these same countries tell us that we should voice our position against separatism,” said Mammadov.

“Recently, two regions of Italy wanted economic independence. This may be the first step. The UK has such problems in connection with Northern Ireland, Scotland. If instead of submitting to geopolitical interests they would have demonstrated fair principles, there would not be such phenomena today. Therefore, it is difficult to accurately predict the processes in Europe and the world. Unfortunately, such situation exists today,” he added.

The top official noted that in the beginning of 1990s, troubling conflicts existed in ten countries, but today these things are already occurring in 50 countries.

If the West, the world justly treated the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and it would has been resolved in a timely and fair manner, then, perhaps, there would not be a majority of these conflicts today, added Mammadov.
