Pro-EU feelings have risen in Azerbaijan as 47% of Azerbaijanis have a positive image of the EU, reads an opinion poll carried out by the EU NEIGHBOURS east project, in collaboration with ACT LLC carried out on an annual basis.

The figure is quite high compared to the United Nations (35%) and NATO (32%).

The 2017 survey shows that pro-EU feelings have risen in Azerbaijan as 47% of Azerbaijanis have a positive image of the EU.

Moreover 68% of Azerbaijanis feel relations with the European Union are good, well ahead of the regional average of 61%.

Some 33% of Azerbaijanis are aware of the EU’s financial support to the country, 65% of those felt it was effective (compared to a regional average of 53%), according to the survey.

The purpose of the annual surveys is to investigate and understand better the opinion and the level of awareness that the citizens of the EU's Eastern Partner countries have about the European Union and the EU's cooperation with their country.

Azerbaijan is currently part of the European Neighborhood Policy, Eastern Partnership and the Council of Europe, and is a large recipient of aid and infrastructure investment from the EU.

In February 2017 the EU and Azerbaijan launched negotiations on a new strategic agreement that will replace the old one.

The EU is Azerbaijan's first trading partner representing 51 percent of Azerbaijan's total trade.

The EU's exports to Azerbaijan consist primarily of machinery and transport equipment whereas EU imports from Azerbaijan cover mainly oil and gas (98 percent of total imports).
