Azerbaijani, Georgian, Turkish defense ministers meet in Batumi

A trilateral meeting of the defense ministers of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey kicked off in Batumi on May 23.

The meeting is focusing on prospects of trilateral military cooperation between Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkey, regional security, and protection of projects being implemented in the region.

During the meeting, Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria extended his condolence to the families of those killed in the terrorist attack in Manchester, UK, noting that Georgia resolutely condemns terror.

His Turkish counterpart Fikri Is?k, in turn, mentioned that his country also struggles against terror.

Azerbaijani Defense Minister, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov also condemned the terrorist attack in Manchester and said that the Azerbaijani government takes a tough stance against terrorism.

He noted that the killing of civilians in terrorist attacks poses a threat to stability, international cooperation and peace. Hasanov stressed the need for a joint fight against terrorism.

The meeting in underway.

Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey actively cooperate in the military sphere. The countries developed a trilateral format in 2014, involving meetings at the level of defense ministers. The last such meeting was held in Gabala in May 2016, where the sides decided to hold trilateral military exercises.

On May 22, Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria announced that Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan plan to hold joint military drills in June and September 2017.
