Azerbaijan, Cuba discuss perspectives of cooperation

Azerbaijan and Cuba enjoy good political relations and have good opportunities for cooperation in spheres of trade and economics, as well as, tourism, culture, and sports.

The remarks were made at a meeting of Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov with the newly appointed Ambassador of Cuba to Azerbaijan Alfredo Fidel Nieves Portuondo.

Mammadyarov received copies of credentials of the Cuban diplomat and congratulated the ambassador on his appointment.

Mammadyarov also expressed his condolences on the death of the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro.

Referring to the interaction of the two countries in the international arena, the minister noted that Azerbaijan will chair the Non-Aligned Movement in 2019-2022 and will host a summit of the Movement in 2019. Therefore, it would be extremely useful to learn in this regard from the experience of Cuba, which is one of the active participants of the organization.

Cuban Ambassador expressed his gratitude to Azerbaijan for support in the framework of the UN. In addition, he stressed that he would make every effort for the development of cooperation between the two countries.

The diplomatic relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Cuba were established on March 27, 1992

Eight documents covering various fields have been signed since then. Trade turnover between the two countries has been growing.

Cuba supports Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and peaceful settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

In turn, the Foreign Minister also praised Cuba's position support of Azerbaijan regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
