Meeting of CIS Heads of Government Council opens in Minsk

The meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council kicked off in a narrow format in Minsk, BelTA reported.

The session will consider more than 20 draft documents related to further development of cooperation in the CIS priority areas. The participants will mull the implementation of the free trade agreement, the energy production and consumption plan for the period through 2030, priority events in the humanitarian cooperation for the mid-term perspective.

 The CIS heads of government will also consider documents that regulate cooperation in the development of the information society, hydro-meteorological activity, the development of the intellectual property market. The participants of the session are expected to introduce amendments to a number of earlier-adopted documents and consider financial and economic issues.

Chairman of the Executive Committee - CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev said that the chairmanship at the CIS will be transferred from Kyrgyzstan to Russia from January 1, 2017.

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was created in December 1991. The CIS united Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.

However, in 2008 Georgia withdrew its membership.

The Council of the Heads of States is one of the charter bodies formed in 1993 to coordinate the activities of customs authorities.
