The Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations doesn't register sects, religious confessions and movements, said Gunduz Ismayilov, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee.

The Committee only registers religious communities, Ismayilov told reporters on August 29, adding that no religious community of Nur movement members registered in Azerbaijan.

He reminded that the Committee imposed restrictions on import of the religious literature belonging to this particular movement several years ago.

Ismayilov stressed that the State Committee has been fighting against religious illiteracy and religious radicalism. He urged the intellectuals and media to support the mission of the State Committee.

Some 96 percent of the Azerbaijani population are Muslims, and four percent are representatives of the Christian, Jewish and other religions.

Azerbaijan is a multinational, multi-religious country, being a home for 649 religious communities. Representatives of all the nations, all religions, all ethnic groups in the country enjoy equal rights. Of course, it is stipulated by the Constitution of the country, but its also the reality.

Religious freedom and support in Azerbaijan is fully provided by the government. The government makes everything possible to restore the historical and religious monuments and the construction of new mosques, synagogues and churches.
