Another Armenian citizen tries to cross Armenian-Azerbaijani border

Another Armenian citizen has been detained on the line of contact while attempting to cross the Azerbaijani-Armenian border.

Azerbaijan`s Defense Ministry said on November 9 that an Armenian citizen, initially identified as Lusine Qukasovna Abovian, a resident of Savarsharan village, Noyemberyan, and born in 1942, has been detained by units of the Azerbaijani armed forces.

She violated the Azerbaijani-Armenian state border by trying to cross it in the direction of the Tovuz region.

The ministry stated that the treatment of the detained Armenian citizen would comply with international law, adding that she will be returned to the Armenian side shortly after the execution of the relevant procedures.

This is not the first time Armenian citizens have attempted to cross the border with Azerbaijan.

They flee their country for various reasons, including escaping poverty and difficult living conditions in Armenia and occupied Azerbaijani territories to enter a third country.

Earlier, an Armenian family fled to Azerbaijan in 2010 to escape what they referred to as “an unbearable life" in Armenia. The family hoped to find shelter in a third country.

In another incident, Armenian soldier Andranik Grigoryan left his military unit on March 22, 2015, and raised a white flag, voluntarily surrendering to the Azerbaijani side. He said he had crossed over to Azerbaijan because unbearable conditions prevail for soldiers in the Armenian military.

However, others violate the border with more sinister motives.

Armenian saboteur Arsen Bagdasaryan, a professional soldier of Armenian armed forces, crossed the Armenian-Azerbaijani contact line in a provocative move.

He was captured by Azerbaijani servicemen in the Aghdam region on December 26, 2014, and subsequently handed over to the authorities to be charged for his crimes. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus neighbor that caused a brutal war in the early 1990s. Long-standing efforts by U.S, Russian and French mediators have been largely fruitless so far.

As a result of the military aggression of Armenia, over 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed, 4,866 are reported missing and almost 100,000 were injured, and 50,000 were disabled.

The UN Security Council has passed four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to this day.
