Azerbaijani Ambassador to Ethiopia Elman Abdullayev met with African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs Aisha Abdullahi on June 30 to discuss bilateral cooperation between the country and the organization.

Abdullayev said Azerbaijan is interested in elevating its cooperation with African Union to a new level.

He provided an insight into achievements of Azerbaijan, as well as humanitarian projects carried out by the support of the country and its contribution to the regional development.

Abdullayev also informed about Armenia`s policy of aggression against Azerbaijan, particularly occupation of 20 percent of the country`s lands.

The Ambassador also spoke about a number of high-profile international events hosted by Azerbaijan, particularly the first European Games.

Aisha Abdullahi estimated Azerbaijan`s activity in humanitarian field.

The African Union is a regional international intergovernmental organization consisting of 52 African states, created in 2001.

The African Union had several main objects and goals such as to rid the continent of the remaining vestiges of colonization and apartheid, to cultivate unity and solidarity among African States, to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Member States and to promote international cooperation within the framework of the United Nations.

Taking into account African realities and nature conditions, the organization has faced difficulties at the very beginning of its existence. However, it continues its development and integration. The majority of foreign and domestic researchers believe that its creation has opened a new chapter in the history of the African continent.
