President reviews Heydar Aliyev Arena

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev reviewed the Heydar Aliyev Sports Palace after a major overhaul on April 22.

President Aliyev was accompanied by Mehriban Aliyeva, the chairperson of the Baku 2015 First European Games Organizing Committee, and Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva.

Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov informed the head of state about the work carried out here.

The building, which construction started in 1977, was commissioned in 1990. The facade of the building was renewed.

The gym was established in line with modern standards. It has a medical point, a 40-seat meeting hall, a cafe, a 250-seat canteen, a kitchen and other additional rooms.

The palace has a room for drawing ceremonies, a doping room, a 200-seat press center, a cafe for journalists, a 40-seat conference room, a 350-seat hall for volunteers and a cafe.

The number of seats in the building, which covers an area of 54,800 square meters, has been increased from 7,587 to 7,830. There are some 126 VIP seats and 30 seats for disabled people.

The preparation of the project involved foreign and local companies and specialists. 222 modern projectors were also installed at the palace.

The sport facility is now ready for the inaugural Baku 2015 European Games that will start on June 12.

During the Games, the Palace will host competitions in Judo, Sambo and Wrestling with a capacity of 4,000 spectaculars.

There is expected to be 366 athletes for Judo, 77 athletes for Sambo and 480 athletes for Wrestling. The venue will be used for Wrestling on June 13-18, for Judo on June 25-28, and for Sambo on June 22.
