The crimes committed by Armenia against the Azerbaijani nation in March 1918 have to be recognized as an act of genocide. Unless such actions are not labeled under their rightful name and punished to the degree they require then one could assume that such heinous crimes will be repeated again.

Mubariz Gurbanli the Chairman of the State Committee of Work with Religious Organizations made the remarks at the event held on Monday in commemoration of March events.

Gurbanli spoke of the murders which were committed in Baku on the eve of Novruz holiday by Armenia in the early 20th century. Every year Azerbaijan remembers its martyrs on March 31.

He noted that Azerbaijan will never forget its martyrs, nor will it allow the world to forget the atrocities which were committed on its ground. He noted that thousands of Azerbaijani men, women and children buried in the Alley of Martyrs in Baku will always be remembered.

Gurbanli also spoke about how the Armenians have always hid behind their strong protectors, always shying away from the truth.

"They created the idea of an Armenian “genocide” to cover their own crimes, using it as a propaganda tool. They also committed offences in Iran, Turkey and in Caucasus."

He recalled that Russia is going to glorify some Armenians that collaborated with its fascist regime on the70th anniversary of the victory over fascism. He stressed the incorrectness of such actions and deplored Russia’s decision to commemorate those persons.

Gurbanli also noted that the memory of the victims of the 31 March genocide should always be honored and that the information about these events must be heard by the younger generation.

The murder policy against Azerbaijanis emerged in early 1900s, when the Soviet authorities appointed Stephan Shaumyan as the extraordinary Commissar of the Caucasus and sent him to Baku in 1918. The Bolsheviks headed by Shaumyan seized power in Baku and made ground for the Armenian armed formations to realize their bloody crimes throughout Azerbaijan.

The mass slaughter of Azerbaijanis started on March 3, 1918, by 4,000 armed men from Dashnaksutyun party under Shaumyan' strict instructions.

The genocide reached its climax on March 31, when Armenians destroyed hundreds of villages and towns in Azerbaijan -150 Azerbaijani settlements in Karabakh were raided and destroyed and an unforeseen bloodbath took place in Shusha.

More than 700,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred including some 30,000 in Baku and surrounding towns. Armenians vandalism resulted in the unprecedented destruction of numerous mosques and schools in Azerbaijan.

Based on an order by Azerbaijan's former president, national leader Heydar Aliyev on March 26, 1998, March 31 was officially announced as the Day of Azerbaijani Genocide.
