Armenian forces kill another Azerbaijani soldier

The Armenian armed forces continue aggravating the tense situation on the contact line of Armenian-Azerbaijani troops by intensive ceasefire violations.

A soldier of Azerbaijani armed forces was killed as a result of heavy shelling by the Armenian troops on February 5, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported on February 6.

Farid Agayev was severely wounded in a shootout of positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces.

The Ministry said despite the fact that the soldier received timely and appropriate medical care, unfortunately it was impossible to save his life.

Defense Ministry leadership has conveyed its deepest condolences to the relatives of the martyr.

The situation on the contact line between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained tense as the Armenian armed forces shattered the ceasefire a total of 86 times in 24 hours, the Ministry said. The Armenians were silenced with retaliatory fire.

The Armenian armed forces have recently increased tension on the contact line of two countries troops with attempts to attack the Azerbaijani positions.

During Armenian troops’ provocation on the frontline in late January one Azerbaijani soldier was killed.

The Ministry said Azerbaijani armed forces killed six Armenians who attempted to cross a mined area.

Armenia captured Nagorno-Karabakh and seven surrounding districts from Azerbaijan in a war that followed the Soviet breakup in 1991. More than 20,000 Azerbaijanis were killed and nearly 1 million were displaced as a result of the war.

Large-scale hostilities ended with a Russia-brokered ceasefire in 1994 but Armenia continued the occupation in defiance of four UN Security Council resolutions. Peace talks mediated by Russia, France and the U.S. have produced no results so far.
