Armenia violates ceasefire with Azerbaijan over 70 times within a day

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian military violated ceasefire 75 times on various parts of the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said Jan. 13.

Armenian armed forces stationed on the nameless heights in the Paravakar, Berkaber, Vazashen, Azatamut villages of Ijevan district, and Dovegh, Barekamavan, Shavarshavan, Voskevan, Voskepar villages of Noyemberian district of Armenia, fired at Azerbaijani military positions on the nameless heights in the Kohnegishlag village of Aghstafa district, and Gizilhajili, Jafarli, Kemerli, Farahli, Gushchuayrim and Ashagi Askipara villages of Gazakh district.

Aside from that, Armenians stationed in the villages of Aygepar and Mosesgeh of Armenia’s Berd district opened fire at Azerbaijani positions in the villages of Alibeyli and Aghdam of Tovuz district.

Azerbaijani military positions also went under fire from positions near the Chilebord, Goyarkh villages of Terter district, Tapgaragoyunlu village of Goranboy district, Kengerli, Yusifjanli, Marzili, Shikhlar, Shuraabad, Javahirli, Shirvanli villages of Aghdam district, and Kuropatkino village of Khojavend district.

Azerbaijani armed forces also came under fire from positions on the nameless heights of Khojavand and Fizuli districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
