The Institute of History under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has unveiled a number of new documents about the transfer of Irevan (current capital of Armenia) and nearby Azerbaijani lands to Armenia.
"Azerbaijani people's historical right of succession on Irevan and the surrounding lands must be restored," Director of the Institute Yagub Mahmudov believes.
Mahmudov said based on real historical facts, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has repeatedly and unequivocally stated that the Armenians have established their state on Azerbaijani territories, which included Irevan and surrounding territories.
"Azerbaijan will not allow the occupant Armenia to create second Armenian state in the Azerbaijani territories. Based on the recommendations and instructions of the president, the Institute of History has expanded the research in this field and found a number of new documents and interesting facts," Mahmudov said.
He noted that the new documents prove that in accordance with the Batumi negotiations and agreements (May 11 - June 4, 1918), the Armenians undertook a number of commitments in exchange of Irevan and nearby Azerbaijani lands.
"However, when the Armenians achieved their goal, they broke the treaties and continued their aggressive policy," he said. "Certain articles of Batumi contracts, as well as the decision of the National Council of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on May 29, 1918 are no longer in force."
Mahmudov believes that the decision of the National Council of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on submitting Irevan and nearby Azerbaijani lands to Armenia must be invalidated, and the Azerbaijani people's right of succession of these territories must be restored.
Based on the new documents, the Armenians made following commitments:
1. The feud between the Armenians and Muslims would be rooted out, the Armenian side, making contact with Shaumyan, will ensure the safety of the Muslim population in Baku, and it will prevent riots organized against the Azerbaijanis. This commitment undertaken by the Armenians was enshrined in Batumi treaty "Peace and Friendship", signed on June 4, 1918, between the Ottoman Empire and the newly established Armenia. Under Article 11 of the treaty, the Armenian government has pledged to involve all military forces for withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from Baku as soon as possible.
2. Armenians had pledged to suppress all riots of Armenian troops, organized against the Azerbaijanis.
3. The Armenian government had pledged to provide religious, cultural and political rights of Muslims in Irevan and other territories of Armenia and education in their native language.
4. Batumi talks reached an agreement that the Armenians should give up their territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
5. In addition, in exchange to Irevan and nearby Azerbaijani lands the Armenians were committed to unite with Azerbaijan in a single confederated state.
Immediately after obtaining the consent of the Armenians on the implementation of the above mentioned obligations, the ancient Azerbaijani city of Irevan and the surrounding Azerbaijani territories, covering an area of ??9,000 square kilometers, have been given to Armenians.
Mahmudov also added that Russia, UK, France and the United States were in favor of future Armenian state on the territory of the Ottoman Empire - in Eastern Anatolia. But the Ottoman Empire strove to establish the Armenian state on the territories of Azerbaijan occupied by the Ottoman military forces in an effort to protect the eastern Anatolia from the "Armenian danger".
