Azerbaijani parliament confirms visa facilitation deal with EU

04 February 2014 [10:55] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani Parliament ratified on February 3 a visa facilitation agreement between Azerbaijan and EU.

The agreement was signed during the EU summit in Vilnius in November 2013.

The document was signed by Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov, European Commissioner Stefan Fule and Foreign Minister of Lithuania Linas Linkyavichus.

The document is awaiting ratification by the European Parliament.

The agreement will take effect in autumn 2014.

Head of the EU delegation to Azerbaijan Malena Mard said:" This will ensure travel for Azerbaijani citizens to the countries of the Schengen area and EU citizens to Azerbaijan.

Additionally, the agreement coming into force will contribute to the development of relations between EU and Azerbaijani citizens."

This agreement will cover a rather extensive list of individuals, primarily students and businessmen and will also involve the introduction of a visa-free regime for diplomatic passports holders.
