Int'l Wheelchair Dance Festival kicks off

The International Wheelchair Dance Festival kicked off in Baku on June 25.

The festival, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of National Paralympics Committee of Azerbaijan was attended by representatives of Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Germany, Trend Life reported.

The event also featured competitions among wheelchair disabled people, organized by the Public Association "Healthy Development of Youth" under the financial support of the Youth Foundation under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The competitions were held in five sports, including basketball, bocce, judo, overcoming obstacles and speed distance on wheelchairs. Over 150 volunteers participated in the festival. The winners were awarded certificates and diplomas.

The Committee is developing 12 of the 19 Paralympic sports. By the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo, two sports will also be added to this list.

Over the past few years, the National paralympic team has made great achievements. Only in 2015, the Paralympic athletes have won 79 medals – 32 gold, 28 silver and 19 bronze.

This year, the national para-athletes will compete in four sports out of the total 23 sports in the Paralympic Games scheduled for September 7-18
