An Iranian official has called for the establishment of centers for the sale of Iranian handicrafts in Azerbaijan.

Bahman Namvar-Motlaq, the deputy head of Iran's Cultural Heritage, Handcrafts and Tourism Organization said at a meeting with Azerbaijani ambassador to Iran Javanshir Akhundov that Iran intends to open handicraft sales centers, the organization's website reported.

Motlaq stressed the importance of further developing the ties between Tehran and Baku, calling for assistance in the establishment of two Iranian handicraft sales centers Azerbaijan.

Noting that Iran and Azerbaijan have common culture, Motlaq said there is a potential for broad cooperation in this field.

“Both countries can implement joint projects and establish the sale centers,” he said.

Motlaq stressed the possibility of joint silk production.

"We hope that the groups of the two countries working in the field of applied art will be able to make mutual visits and strengthen cooperation," he said.

Akhundov, in turn, stressed the importance of publishing books, pamphlets, and academic pieces about handicrafts at Azerbaijani and Iranian universities.

He also stressed that the mutual exhibitions in this field will play an important role.

Azerbaijan and Iran have had diplomatic relations since 1918. Iran recognized Azerbaijan's independence in 1991 and diplomatic relations between the two countries were reestablished in 1992.

Currently, the two countries are focused on expanding economic ties in various fields, including industry, agriculture, energy, alternative energy, and transportation.

Tehran and Baku have recently intensified bilateral relations with an expectation of further deepening all-out cooperation between the two close neighbors.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s administration, which voiced commitment to enhance ties with the neighboring countries, has given special importance to development of ties with Azerbaijan.
