Baku unites researchers of the Book of Dede Korkut

History and traditions are the unifying force and the Book of Dede Korkut, a heroic epic poem of the Oghuz, is consolidating the Turkic nations, Azerba?anis, Turks, Turkmens and the Gagauz.

This antique epos is a grand testament to the culture of the Turkic world of ancient and medieval times.

"Dede Korkut" is an invaluable source that describes ethnography, historical geography, language, mindset, outlook, socio-political and moral views, showing us good morals and culture of the Turkic people.

A chain of year-round events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the translation, introduction to the world and the earliest study of the epic The Book of Dede Korkut by German Orientalist, diplomat Friedrich von Dietz, has started in Azerbaijan in mid-January.

The events are held with participation of Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism, the Knowledge Foundation under the Azerbaijani President, Baku Slavic University, Kultura plus Internet TV, State Counselor on Multiculturalism, Inter-ethnic and Religious Affairs of Azerbaijan, Academician Kamal Abdullayev.

The outstanding Korkut lovers from Turkey, Germany, Italy, Russia, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Latvia were hosted by their Azerbaijani colleagues at the end of January.

Members of the International Colloquium “The Book of Dede Korkut and Friedrich von Dietz – 200”, who have earned special respect for advocating the ancient history, traditions and multicultural values of Azerbaijan in the world, delivered original speeches and made important suggestions in regard to the profound study of The Book of Dede Korkut.

The first meeting was held at Baku International Centre of Multiculturalism where local members of the International Colloquium were elected.

The event was attended by prominent scholars, researchers and advocates of the legacy of Dede Korkut. The ideas expressed by them during the discussions found their reflection in the program of actions to be held all through the year of 2015 to introduce The Book of Dede Korkut profoundly both in the country and abroad.

The meeting was also attended by the representatives of the national and religious communities of Azerbaijan. Along with the philologists, mathematicians, physicists, geologists, turcologists, in general, scholars of different fields joined the discussions which was one of the distinguishing features of the colloquium.

Addressing the event, State Counselor Kamal Abdullayev, underlined his confidence that the suggestions to be made by the scholars would make great contributions to the study and advocacy of The Book of Dede Korkut.

The participants of the event have already been to Baku several times. They pointed out the development both in sight and essence, as well as the obvious changes.

“When I come to Baku, the first thing I think is, unfortunately, I am returning soon. No matter how many days my visit is, on my return from Baku, it seems to me as if I had done little sightseeing, I hadn’t seen enough beauties,” Sandro Teti added.

A plan of actions to be held all through 2015 aimed at the advocacy of The Book of Dede Korkut was determined at the event.
