The legendary tragedy of Sophocles will be staged by world-famous Greek director Theodoros Terzopoulos in Baku by the end of the year.

Terzopoulos arrived in Baku at the invitation of the Head of the Azerbaijan Academic National Drama Theater Israfil Israfilov, the theater reported.

Based on an agreement, which was signed between the director and the theater, Terzopoulos will stage "Antigone", originally written in or before 441 BC.

In his two-day visit to Baku, Terzopoulos discussed the details of the upcoming performance, met with young theater directors, actors, and experts, and answered their questions.

The Greek director will hold a casting for the play during his next visit to Azerbaijan's capital; workshops and master classes will also be held.

Terzopoulos is one of the Europe's leading theater directors; he's been the President of the International Committee of the Theater Olympiad since 1993. He established the Attis Theater in Athens in 1985 and organized the Delphi Meeting of Ancient Drama. He founded and then headed the International Institute of Mediterranean Theaters in 1990.

Terzopoulos has received many prestigious theater awards for his directions: "The Bacchae" was appreciated the best performance at the Madrid and Malaga Festival (1987), and "Persians" in Karakas, Montpelier and Barcelona (1992), and Lisbon (1993).
