Irina Khakamada: "Mass protests in Russia can start only in case of the impoverishment of the majority of the country's population"

31 October 2008 [12:05] - TODAY.AZ
Considering the speed and actions, taken for the settlement of the problems, connected with the financial crisis in the world, the Russian leadership has not expected the crisis to be so damaging, especially for big companies, said Irina Khakamada, famous Russian economist and political and public figure.

She said, therefore, on the first stage all actions of the Russian leadership deteriorated the situation and only later we could witness the economic improvement.

Asked about the reason the implications of the financial crisis in Russia do not transform into the political distrust of the country's population to the working powers and do not lead to mass protests, she said there are no mass protests in Russia as the financial crisis has affected big companies on the first stage, not ordinary people.

"It happens because the leaders of the producing companies hold soft policy, preserving the salary of the workers but reducing the number of work days. We had a high inflation even before the crisis, thus today we have to hope that no one in Russia will strive for aggressive money earning, raising the prices to the top. If active professional actions for curbing the financial crisis are not taken, there is a high possibility of the transfer of its implications to the real economic sector.

In order to avoid such a negative development script, two things are necessary to be done: untie the financial knots as soon as possible by means of reducing taxes, real combat with corruption and transfer of lands under privileged provisions for support of the real economic sector", said the economist.

Speaking about the possible influence of the drop in oil prices below $50 per barrel on the population, according to her, the rise in the opposition modds in Russia may occur in any drop, but Russian people are too conservative, they lack Georgian temper and Ukrainian love for freedom. Therefore, mass protests in Russia may start only in case of the impoverishment of the majority of the country's population, which will not occur immediately under the drop in oil prices below $50 per barrel.

As for the influence of implications of the global financial crisis and the drop of oil prices on Azerbaijan, she said Azerbaijan's economy though smaller by volumes, also depends on oil prices on the world markets, which means that the receipts of the minimalization of threat and losses, connected with possible drop in oil prices is the same: ensuring transparency in economy, creating more privileged conditions for development of small and middle business and development of advanced technologies.

"It is necessary to maximally encourage the internal investment and consumer demand, which may ensure the economic growth, not immediately by means of oil and gas transportation. In order to encourage this demand, especially the investment one, it is necessary to create privileged conditions in the sphere of rental fees and taxes for investors. It is necessary to do everything for the profits of one sector to grow in case of the drop in the incomes from other sectors", concluded she.
