Heydar Babayev: "Azerbaijan is able to meet 70% of its demands of food"

13 June 2008 [15:24] - TODAY.AZ
"Azerbaijan would have been able to meet 70% of its demands of food under the due organization", said Economic Development Minister Heydar Babayev.
He said today the government does not set a task to attain 100% in this direction.

"For instance, Azerbaijan does not import meat at all. But on the whole, food should be imported. Perhaps, someone wants Argentine meat on the market. Moreover, the population is used to seeing fruits and vegetables available in trade points and for this purpose, important is a need", noted the Minister.

As for expansion of export potentials of the country in the said group, Babayev announced that today Azerbaijan supplies food in Russia and there are proposals on this issue from some Arabic states.

"But the essence of the problem is deeper, which I have stated repeatedly. The question is that in Azerbaijan there is a need for consolidation of farming economies. Our economies are too small, their productiveness is low along with economic capacities. The prices in Quba are justly higher than those in Baku", noted Babayev.

At the same time, he noted that unification of farms should occur without state interference, which should, however, encourage this process.
