Azerbaijan may lay one more export gas pipeline

06 June 2008 [09:05] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan may need to lay another gas pipeline for transportation of its gas to the world markets, said first vice president of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Khoshbakht Yusifzade.
He said "the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzirum gas pipeline will be filled completely. If we discover fields at 5 structures-Umid, Babek, Nakhchivan, Absheron and Zafar-Mashal-it will mean additional 1.4 trillion cubic meters of gas to the currently existing 1.6 trillion cubic meters of proven reserves.

Naturally, if one pipeline does not suffice it will be necessary to lay another one. This issue will be especially urgent considering the possibility of transportation of Kazakh and Turkmen gas via Azerbaijan. "It is most easier for Turkmenistan as there is a gas pipeline to Western Azeri. Taking into account that the width of the Caspian Sea makes 250 kilometers, another 90-100 kilometers are to be laid for Turkmenistan to connect to our gas pipeline system, which will not cost too much", noted Yusifzade.

He considers that most disputable issues between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan will be settled following the definition of the Caspian status.
