UN World Food Program renders $115 mln of assistance to Azerbaijan

Within 14 years the UN World Food Program rendered assistance of 164,000 tons of different food products to Azerbaijan.


According to Novosti-Azerbaijan, the due information was provided by Fuad Huseynov, chief of department of transport and provision of the program's office in Azerbaijan.

"The overall aid of the humanitarian assistance to Azerbaijan is estimated at $115 mln", he noted during the informational session for journalists.

He also announced that the program started operating in Azerbaijan in 1994 to provide food aid to refugees and 800,000 internally displaced persons.

The activity of the program included provision of free food aid to internally displaced persons, residing in rural areas.

"The food ration of the program includes various products, mainly, flour, vegetable oil and granulated sugar. Each internally displaced person receives 6 kg of flour, 0.6 liters of oil, 450 grams of granulated sugar, 150 grams of salt", noted he.

The World Food Program was founded in 1963 by an agreement between the economic and social councils, as well as the food and agricultural organization of the United Nations. Activity of the program is regulated by its executive council, comprising 36 countries.

The main task of the program is provision of food assistance to the countries with extremely law level of income and for meeting emergency needs of victims of armed conflicts and disasters,

The main donors of the program are the United States, Canada, European Union (among them Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden are more active), as well as Japan.
