Center of Economic Research: "Minimal pensions and wages in Azerbaijan are below the minimal consumer basket"

08 May 2008 [15:22] - TODAY.AZ
The cost of per capita minimal consumer basket in Azerbaijan in April of 2005 made up AZN 117.8 (about $143 by the current exchange rate).
According to Novosti-Azerbaijan, the said information was provided by the Center of Economic Research, considering the list of minimum products, services and nonfoods, defined by the Cabinet of ministers.

The consumer basket defined by the Cabinet of Ministers includes 12 essential goods and services.

The Center drew results from the calculations of the minimal consumer basket for three categories of the Azerbaijani citizens.

According to the chairman of the center Qubad Ibadoghlu, in April the consumer basket for children under 15 made AZN 101.7 ($123), for pensioners AZN 83.9 (about $102), for a working person AZN 117.8 (about $143).

The minimal wage and minimal pension in Azerbaijan have been risen and brought from AZN 50 up to AZN 60 (about $73) since January 1 of 2008.

"With such minimal pension and wages most pensioners and some working people can not meet their minimal demands", said Ibadoghlu.

The Center suggests to the country's Cabinet of Ministers to reconsider amounts of minimal pensions and wages to the population and bring them in conformity with the minimal needs of the population.
