Azerbaijan to experience 35% rise in grain output

08 April 2008 [11:18] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan’s grain crop is expected to be 35% or 600 000 tons higher than 2007, said Sabir Valiyev, officer of the country’s ministry of agriculture.
According to him, grain has been planted in 818 000 hectares of land, 25.5% or 166 000 hectares more than a year earlier.

“Expansion of grain planting is encouraged by government subsidy to farmers. We hope that a record harvest will be achieved this year,” he noted.

He also noted that the prices of grain and wheat were mainly pushed up by world market trends rather than shortage.

Azerbaijan harvested 1.7 million tons of grain from 652 000 hectares in 2007.
