Italy plans to hold talks on gas supplies with Azerbaijan

Italian Edison SpA intends to hold talks with Azerbaijan to launch project of pipeline Greece -Italy.





The due announcement was made by company's chief executive Umberto Guadrino.

He highly appreciated the prospects of holding talks: "I think the first meeting with the Azerbaijani side will take place in early March. We expect good news until summer".

Guadrino considers that Azerbaijani gas is a important source for effective operation of the pipeline. It is planned to study preliminary results of talks until June.

The annual capacity of the pipeline of 800 kilometers in length will make up 8,000,000,000 cubic meters. Greece will account for 590 kilometers of pipeline, another 217 kilometers will be laid on the ground of the Ionian Sea. The construction will commence in June of this year and finish in 2011. The total cost of the project will make up EUR 950,000,000.

An intergovernmental agreement was signed on November 4 of 2006 by Italian Ministry of Industry Claudio Shaiola and Greek Minister of Development Dimitros Sioufas with participation of Turkey Minister of Energy Khilmi Guler.
