Azercell Telecom subscriber base up 33% in 2006

The subscriber base of Azeri mobile operator Azercell Telecom rose 33% in 2006 to 2.33 million users as of late 2006, company CEO Halim Ates said at a news conference Tuesday.

Azercell invested 120 million manat in development last year, Ates said, without providing a comparison.

He said the operator planned to invest the same amount this year to install more than 350 base stations across the country and increase the subscriber base to 2.5 million people.

Azercell controls 76% of Azerbaijan's mobile market and its network covers 77% of the country's territory, Ates said.

Azerbaijan's government holds 34.6% in Azercell Telecom and Turkish Telecom holds 65.4%. Prime-Tass
