Export of fruits, vegetables ups by over 60pct

With the Azerbaijani market becoming more saturated with locally produced goods, the continued expansion into foreign markets appears inevitable. And agricultural sector is of significant importance for expanding Azerbaijan’s exports to the world markets.

The export of fruits and vegetables of Azerbaijani origin grew by 62 percent in weight in January-July 2017, compared to the same period of last year, according to Aydin Aliyev.

The head of the State Customs Committee, addressing a meeting with exporters in the country’s Yevlakh region, stressed that Azerbaijan has paved its way to new major markets.

Aliyev said that some $360 million worth of [Azerbaijan made] products had been exported to China.

“These were not fruits and vegetables, but alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as other non-oil products, which is related to the development of the non-oil sector. Other countries, in particular Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, also show interest in Azerbaijan’s food products,” he added.

Azerbaijan has started promoting the ‘Made in Azerbaijan’ brand in foreign markets since 2016, and already recorded about 36.5 percent growth in the exports in January-June 2017. 

As of today, 92 trademarks of Azerbaijan are protected under the ‘Made in Azerbaijan’ brand, while the country’s total outputs nears  250 kinds of products in food, light, heavy and construction industries. The brand is highly successful in regional and world markets, and Azerbaijan’s local output meets all the necessary standards.

Thanks to national export missions touring the world, Azerbaijani goods accessed major supermarkets and already see high demand.

Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover amounted to $10.5 billion in January-June of 2017.

In January-July of 2017 Azerbaijan carried out trade operations with 176 countries. The main export operations the country carried out with Italy (22.57 percent of total exports), Turkey (12.46 percent), China (5.54 percent) and Russia (5.35 percent).

Overall, the top five countries importing non-oil products of Azerbaijan include Russia, Turkey, Georgia, Switzerland and Turkmenistan.

The country exports milk, sunflower oil, chicken meat, carrot, wine, butter, apple, pomegranate, pomegranate juice, tea, cosmetics, fuel, paint, silk carpet, bed linen, nuts, cognac, carrots, yellow onions, wine, apples, tea, cottonseed oil, cosmetics, cherry concentrate, medical gauze, mushrooms, tobacco etc.

In order to expand the export geography of non-oil products, the Azerbaijani government is also very active in opening of trading houses abroad, the first of which was opened in Belarus this May.
